Frontier Developments makes both games, so the comparison is really about two design goals inside one studio: a living zoo of real species, and a dinosaur park built on a film licence. Everything in the table below comes from each game's own Steam store page, checked on October 2, 2026.

Where Planet Zoo 2 is the stronger pick
- Real animals. The compiled roster stands at 120 real species across land, flying, aquatic and exhibit groups, revealed through the official Zoopedia. If your interest is animal welfare, species behaviour and conservation, that is this game's whole identity.
- The new building blocks. Aquariums and aviaries are new to the series, and Wildlife Reserves extend the loop from running a zoo to releasing animals into living ecosystems.
- Cross-platform creations. The Frontier Workshop shares blueprints across platforms, which the first game's workshop never did.
Where Jurassic World Evolution 2 is the stronger pick
- A story campaign. Its store page leads with a narrative campaign voiced by film cast, plus Chaos Theory scenarios built around the movies. Planet Zoo 2's store description promises no such mode.
- It is out now. The game has been playable since November 9, 2021, with years of patches and content behind it. Planet Zoo 2 is two weeks from launch at the time of writing.
- Dinosaurs, full stop. If the fantasy is a T. rex and not a tiger, no zoo sim competes with the licence.
Our read, labelled as an opinion
If you want the deepest current-generation animal management sim and can wait until October 13, Planet Zoo 2 is the game built for that. If you want a finished game today, a story mode, or dinosaurs specifically, Jurassic World Evolution 2 already exists and costs less than waiting matters. The two games are close enough in spirit, park building from Frontier, that many players will simply own both.
FAQ
Is Planet Zoo 2 just Frontier's version of Jurassic World Evolution 2?
No. They share a developer and a park-building foundation, but Planet Zoo 2 simulates real zoos with real species and welfare systems, while Jurassic World Evolution 2 is a dinosaur park game on a film licence.
Which game has more animals?
Planet Zoo 2's roster is 124 real species in Zoopedia as of October 2, 2026, read from Frontier's own page rather than any wiki. Jurassic World Evolution 2's dinosaur count is not compared here because the species simply are not equivalent, real animals versus prehistoric ones.
Do both games have multiplayer?
Neither store page announces realtime multiplayer. Both carry a Single-player tag on Steam. Planet Zoo 2's Franchise mode does let you trade animals with other players.
